Can you still buy QuickBooks Desktop?
The short version: if you already own or subscribe to QuickBooks Desktop, you can keep using it. New purchases are the part that changed -- and the details matter.
What changed
- No more one-time licenses. Intuit moved to annual subscriptions years ago; the last one-time-purchase edition was QuickBooks Desktop 2021.
- Stop-sell to new subscribers. Intuit stopped selling Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, and Enhanced Payroll to new US subscribers. Existing subscribers keep renewing and receiving updates and support.
- Enterprise continues. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is still sold and supported as a subscription, with no announced end-of-life (though each version-year still follows the 3-year service sunset).
Stop-sell is not discontinuation
“Can’t buy it new” and “stops working” are different things. Stop-sell limits new purchases; your existing install keeps running. See does Desktop stop working?
If you already have it
You are in the strongest position: keep your version, freeze it, and run it for years. Nothing about the stop-sell forces you off.
If you don’t own it yet
Your realistic options are: subscribe to Enterprise (still sold); source a legitimate existing license/older version; or evaluate whether an alternative (including QuickBooks Online) fits. Be cautious of grey-market “lifetime” license sellers. If you do get an older version, our reinstall & reactivate guide covers activation.
