QuickBooks Error 1310: Directory Write Failure
QuickBooks Error 1310 stops the installer when it cannot write to a required folder. Learn why it appears and how to finish the install cleanly.
QuickBooks Desktop error 1310 is a Windows Installer failure. It appears partway through an installation, repair, or update when the installer tries to create or write a file and Windows refuses the request. The company file is not the problem, and the fix belongs in the Windows environment around the installer.
The error message as QuickBooks displays it
The dialog may end prematurely, but the installer records the same core line every time:
Error 1310: Error writing to file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX\... Verify that you have access to that directory.
The folder path is the part that changes between builds. Some machines show the line inside a Windows Installer dialog rather than inside QuickBooks itself.
The meaning of error 1310
Error 1310 is returned by Microsoft Windows Installer, not by the QuickBooks data engine. It means the installation transaction could not write to the named directory. QuickBooks setup stops at that point to avoid leaving a partial installation. Windows may refuse the write because of permissions, a locked file, security software, a missing temporary folder, or a damaged installer cache. Since the installer works in stages, the failure can occur after QuickBooks appears to have started installing.
Common triggers for error 1310
- The setup file was not run as administrator.
- The target folder under Program Files or Program Files (x86) is restricted.
- Real-time antivirus or endpoint protection blocks the installer's temporary file writes.
- A previous QuickBooks process or service still holds a file open.
- The installer package is incomplete from a failed download or extraction.
- The temp folder is full, locked, or missing.
- There is not enough free space on the installation drive, or the install path is unusually long.
Fix QuickBooks error 1310
Work through these blocks in order. The first two resolve most cases.
Trigger 1: The installer lacks administrator rights
- Close the failing installer and any QuickBooks windows.
- Find the QuickBooks setup file, often named setup.exe or QuickBooks.exe.
- Right-click the file and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt, then run the installation or repair again.
Trigger 2: Write permissions on the target or temp folder
- Open File Explorer and paste the folder path shown in the error.
- If Windows hides the folder, enable hidden items under the View tab.
- Right-click the parent folder, choose Properties, then Security.
- Confirm that your user account has Modify or Full control. If it does not, use an account that does, then retry.
Trigger 3: Security software interrupting the write
- If company policy allows, open your antivirus or endpoint protection console and turn off real-time protection temporarily.
- Run the QuickBooks installer as administrator.
- Re-enable real-time protection immediately after the install completes.
Trigger 4: Locked or stale QuickBooks processes
- Open Task Manager and end any processes named QBW32.exe, QBUpdate.exe, QBCFMonitorService.exe, or QBServerUtilityMgr.exe.
- Open Services, find Windows Installer, right-click and choose Restart.
- Empty the user temp folder: press the Windows key, type
%temp%, press Enter, select the files, and delete what Windows will allow. Skip any locked files.
Trigger 5: Damaged installer files or cache
- If the setup was extracted from a download, delete the extracted files and extract a fresh copy into a new folder.
- If the installer came as a download, obtain a new copy from the account or media originally used.
- Run the new setup file as administrator.
Trigger 6: Low disk space or long install path
- Check free space on the drive where QuickBooks is installed and on the drive holding the temp folder.
- Clear enough space for the installer's temporary files. The amount varies by version.
- Use the default install path unless a specific business policy requires a custom path. Avoid adding extra nested folders.
Preventing error 1310 from recurring
After the installation finishes, put these practices in place. Always right-click the QuickBooks setup file and choose Run as administrator for installs, repairs, and major updates. Restart the computer before a large update to release file locks and finish pending Windows updates. Temporarily disable real-time protection during a planned update, then re-enable it. Keep the Windows temp folder clear of stale files. Avoid custom install paths that add many nested folders, and keep enough free space on the system drive for installer staging.
