QuickBooks Error 15104 -- Payroll Update Fails to Install
QuickBooks error 15104 stops a payroll or maintenance update before it finishes; we explain what the code means and how to get the update installed again.
Error 15104 appears when a QuickBooks Desktop payroll or maintenance update fails part way through. We see it most often on machines where several years of Desktop sit side by side, or where an update download was cut off. The code is not a data problem. Your company file is untouched, and the update can normally be completed in a few minutes once you know which trigger applies.
The Exact Error Message
Most releases show this line: "Error 15104: The update installer has failed." Some years phrase the dialog more generally, reporting that the update was not completed successfully, with 15104 shown in the expanded details. The message can appear while the patch is still downloading, or a moment later, when the installer starts and stops at once.
What Does Error 15104 Mean?
The 15xxx series covers download and update failures. 15104 points at the installer itself rather than the connection alone. QuickBooks Desktop applies a maintenance release or a payroll update through a small installer that runs after the download completes. If the installer receives a damaged package, or tries to patch a different product than the one you have open, it stops and reports 15104.
What Triggers It?
Three situations account for almost every case our engineers handle.
The wrong version is open. Desktop years install side by side, and each carries its own patch package. Start an update from the wrong year's window and the installer cannot apply what it received.
The download was interrupted. A dropped connection, a computer that went to sleep, or a program closed too early leaves a partial package the installer rejects.
The installer lacked permission. Without Windows administrator rights, the installer cannot replace the components it needs to change, and it fails without touching anything.
Fix 1: The Wrong Version Is Open
- Close QuickBooks Desktop everywhere. Check the system tray and Task Manager for a second QBW32.EXE process; that means another year is still running in the background.
- Open only the version you intend to update. Press F2 to open the Product Information window and confirm the year, edition, and release number at the top.
- Go to the Help menu, choose Update QuickBooks Desktop, and run the update from that copy of the program so the patch matches the product.
- Leave the installer alone until it finishes and prompts you to restart.
Fix 2: The Download Was Interrupted
- With the correct year open, go to the Help menu and choose Update QuickBooks Desktop.
- On the Update Now tab, tick the Reset Update box, then click Get Updates. This discards the partial download and fetches a fresh copy.
- Keep the machine awake until the download finishes. Plug in a laptop and set Windows sleep to Never for the duration.
- Run the update again once the download reports complete.
Fix 3: The Installer Cannot Replace Files
- Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon, choose Run as administrator, and repeat the update.
- If it fails again, save your work, open the folder where QuickBooks is installed, and run reboot.bat. The file reregisters the QuickBooks and Windows components the installer depends on, then restarts the computer.
- Retry the update after the restart. If 15104 still appears, a clean reinstall of the same year resolves the damaged components. The company file lives in its own folder and is not affected by reinstalling the program.
Keeping Error 15104 From Coming Back
Update each installed year from its own window, one version at a time, and never with two copies running at once. Let every download finish; a laptop that sleeps mid-download is the most common way a package arrives damaged. If your Windows account is a standard user, run the update as administrator from the start. After each update, press F2 and check that the release number has changed, which confirms the patch actually applied. Finally, complete updates well before a payroll deadline, so a failed patch caught early never holds up pay day.
