QuickBooks Error 15107 - Damaged Update File Stops Payroll and Maintenance Updates

QuickBooks error 15107 stops a payroll or maintenance update because the downloaded file is damaged; this page explains how to clear it and update again.

Error 15107 belongs to the 15xxx block of update failures in QuickBooks Desktop. It surfaces while the program downloads a payroll table or a maintenance release, and it stops the install immediately. The cause is nearly always a single damaged update component sitting in the local cache. Our engineers treat it as one of the cleaner codes in this family to resolve.

What does error 15107 look like on screen?

The update window halts partway and a dialog follows. The exact wording varies between releases, but most installations show text along these lines:

Error 15107: QuickBooks is unable to verify the digital signature of the update file.

Payroll users typically meet it in the Get Payroll Updates window after starting a tax table download. The status line reports the error instead of completing. In the general update window, the progress bar simply stops with the code beside it. The number, not the wording, is what identifies the fault.

What does the code mean?

Every patch QuickBooks Desktop downloads carries a digital signature from Intuit. Before installing anything, the update agent checks the signature on the copy it received. Error 15107 means that check failed. The file on disk does not match what was signed, or the signature could not be read at all. The program refuses the install rather than apply a component it cannot authenticate. That refusal protects your books, but it leaves the software waiting for a clean download.

What triggers error 15107?

A damaged or incomplete download is the leading trigger by a wide margin. A dropped connection, a machine going to sleep, or a forced restart mid-download leaves a partial file in the update cache. Verification then fails on the next attempt.

An incorrect system clock is the next most common cause. Signature checks are time sensitive, so a PC whose date, time, or time zone has drifted can reject a perfectly good file.

Less often, security software inspects the download in flight and strips or quarantines part of it. A damaged installation, missing Windows cryptography components, or a Windows account without write access to the update folders produces the same code.

How do you fix error 15107?

Work the scenarios in order. The first one clears most cases our engineers handle.

Clear the damaged cached file

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop and restart the workstation. This releases file locks and discards half-written temporary files.
  2. In File Explorer, open Public Documents, then Intuit, then QuickBooks, then Components.
  3. Delete the contents of the Payroll folder and of any folder named Download followed by your version number. QuickBooks rebuilds these automatically.
  4. Right-click the QuickBooks shortcut and choose Run as administrator, then open your company file.
  5. From the Help menu, choose Update QuickBooks Desktop, open the Update Now tab, select everything listed, and click Get Updates. For payroll tables, use Get Payroll Updates under the Employees menu instead.
  6. Let the download finish without switching tasks, and restart the machine if the program asks.

Correct the system clock

  1. Confirm the date, time, and time zone in Windows before anything else.
  2. Open Settings, then Time & Language, then Date & time, turn on automatic time, and use the Sync now option.
  3. Run the update again exactly as in step 5 above.

Let the download past your security software

  1. Temporarily disable the firewall or antivirus and retry the update.
  2. If that succeeds, re-enable protection and add exceptions for the QuickBooks program files and the Components folder.
  3. Keep the exceptions in place, since the same inspection will otherwise break the next patch cycle.

Repair the installation

  1. Back up the company file before you begin.
  2. Run the QuickBooks Tool Hub, which Intuit publishes as a free utility, and use the installation diagnostic under the Installation Issues tab.
  3. Let the diagnostic finish, restart the machine, and pull the update once more.
  4. If the code persists after that, a clean uninstall and reinstall of QuickBooks Desktop is the remaining step.

How can you stop error 15107 from coming back?

Prevention is mostly about protecting the download itself. Use a wired connection for large payroll table updates, and set the machine to stay awake until the progress bar completes. In multi-user setups, update the hosting server first, then the workstations, so no machine fetches a patch through a peer.

Keep Windows time synchronization on, since a drifting clock will fail good files. After any antivirus upgrade, confirm the QuickBooks exceptions survived the change. Reboot before a large update, because a fresh start clears the temporary files that corrupt a download in progress. These habits remove nearly every path this error takes.
