QuickBooks Error 15218: Update Download Blocked or Failing Verification
Error 15218 blocks a QuickBooks Desktop update when the download is intercepted or its digital signature fails checks; here is how we clear it.
Error 15218 stops a QuickBooks Desktop maintenance release or payroll update partway through. The download either never finishes, or it finishes and then fails the trust check QuickBooks runs before installing anything. Our engineers clear this error regularly, and it almost always traces back to something sitting between QuickBooks and the update server.
What does the error message say?
The error surfaces in the update status window after QuickBooks tries to fetch new files. A typical reading is "Error 15218: The update did not complete successfully, and the downloaded files could not be verified." Some releases shorten it to "Error 15218: QuickBooks Desktop could not verify the update." The exact wording varies by release, but the code and the failed update are constant.
What does error 15218 mean?
Codes in the 15xxx range all point at the update channel, not at your company file. Error 15218 sits at the verification stage. Before installing a downloaded update, QuickBooks checks each file's Intuit digital signature against certificates the computer already trusts. If a file arrives incomplete, altered in transit, or stripped by security software, that check fails and installation halts. Nothing here points to data damage; your company file is not the problem.
Common triggers
Four situations produce this error in practice. A firewall or antivirus on the computer blocks or quarantines part of the download. The digital signature cannot be validated, often because the system clock is wrong or certificate trust is stale. A proxy or content filter on the network rewrites or truncates the update traffic. Finally, Windows permissions deny the updater write access to its own folder. The first cause is the one our engineers see most often.
How do you fix error 15218?
Work through the scenarios in order, since each assumes the one before it has been ruled out.
Security software is blocking the download
- Close QuickBooks and open your firewall or antivirus console.
- Check its block, quarantine, or event log for entries naming QuickBooks or its update components.
- Restore anything it removed, then add an exception covering the whole QuickBooks program folder and its executables.
- Reopen QuickBooks and run the update again from the Help menu, under Update QuickBooks Desktop.
- If the software offers no per-application exceptions, pause its live filtering, complete the update, and switch it back on.
The digital signature fails verification
- Check the computer's date, time, and time zone. A wrong clock makes a valid signature read as expired.
- Right-click the QuickBooks executable inside the program folder and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab and confirm an Intuit entry that Windows lists as valid.
- Select it, choose Details, and view the certificate. If Windows reports it cannot be verified, follow the prompt to place it in the trusted store.
- A file with no valid signature at all means the installation is damaged. Download a fresh installer and reinstall over the existing copy.
A proxy or content filter is interfering
- Ask whoever manages the connection whether traffic passes through a proxy or content filter.
- In Windows, open Internet Options, go to the Connections tab, then LAN settings, and review what is configured.
- Have the update traffic excluded from inspection, or move the workstation to a connection without filtering.
- As a quick test, retry the update from an unfiltered network such as a phone hotspot. Success there confirms the network was the blocker.
Windows permissions are in the way
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Right-click the QuickBooks icon and choose Run as administrator.
- Retry the update. The updater needs write access to its program folder to stage the new files.
How do you keep error 15218 from coming back?
Three habits stop nearly all repeat cases. Re-check your firewall exceptions after each annual QuickBooks upgrade: a new version installs into a new folder, so last year's exceptions stop matching. Set the system clock to synchronize automatically, because signature checks depend on it. Run updates from a Windows administrator account rather than a limited one.
Major Windows updates occasionally reset certificate trust or firewall profiles. If the error returns after one, check those two settings before assuming the update itself failed.
When none of that works
If every scenario checks out and the error persists, the remaining suspect is a damaged program installation. A clean reinstall restores properly signed files and usually ends the problem. That means uninstalling QuickBooks, renaming the leftover installation folders, and installing again from a fresh download of the same release.
