QuickBooks Error 15220: Payroll Update Blocked by Firewall
QuickBooks Error 15220 blocks payroll and software updates when firewall or Internet settings interfere. Fix the cause and complete the update.
Error 15220 is one of the 15xxx update errors that appears when QuickBooks Desktop cannot finish a payroll or software update. In most cases this code is not a company file problem. It points to a blocked path between the update service and the download server. Our engineers see the same pattern: security software, stale Internet settings, or an interrupted Windows service stops the update before any new files are written. The steps below clear those blocks and let the update run again.
The error message you will see
QuickBooks Desktop can show Error 15220 in a few ways. The update routine commonly reports this line: "Error 15220: QuickBooks could not complete the update." When the failure is more severe, the program may also show the dialog "QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." In payroll-only failures, the message usually appears after the download step begins.
The meaning of Error 15220
Error 15220 means the update client started, but the connection or the install routine was cut off before the new payroll or program files could be verified. QuickBooks Desktop uses Windows Internet components to reach the update server, even when another browser is the default. When those components are disabled, misconfigured, or blocked, the update fails with a 15xxx code. The error does not mean your company file is damaged, and it does not normally require a data rebuild.
Common triggers for Error 15220
The triggers we see most often are:
- Firewall or antivirus rules that treat the QuickBooks updater as an unknown program.
- Internet Explorer security settings that have TLS disabled or the browser in a locked-down state.
- The Intuit Update Service is stopped or set to Manual.
- Windows date, time, or region is wrong, which breaks certificate checks.
- A partial or interrupted update left mixed program files behind.
Fix Error 15220 step by step
Work through these blocks in order and retry the update after each one.
Allow QuickBooks through firewall and antivirus
- Open Windows Defender Firewall and choose Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Select Change settings, then Allow another app. Add the QuickBooks executable from the QuickBooks installation folder.
- Add the updater file as well. It is normally named QBUpdate.exe.
- If IntuitUpdateService.exe is present in the same location, add it too.
- Make sure the Private and Public check boxes are selected for each entry.
- If you use a third-party antivirus, set the QuickBooks installation folder as an exclusion. Look for options named Exclusions, Allowed apps, or Trusted files.
- Save the firewall change and try the update again.
Reset Internet Explorer security settings
QuickBooks Desktop still reads Windows Internet Options during payroll updates, so stale settings here are a common cause.
- Close QuickBooks Desktop.
- Open Internet Options from Windows search or by typing inetcpl.cpl in the Run box.
- On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and select Use TLS 1.2.
- Still on the Advanced tab, click Reset and choose to restore Internet Explorer to its default settings.
- Close Internet Options, reopen QuickBooks Desktop, and run the update again.
Restart the update service and run as administrator
- Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Intuit Update Service in the list. Some editions name it Intuit Update Service v4.
- Right-click the service and choose Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic. If the service is not running, click Start, then OK.
- Close Services. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- Retry the payroll or software update.
Correct Windows date, time, and region
- Open Windows Date & time settings.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
- If those options are already on, turn them off, wait a few seconds, and turn them back on.
- Confirm that the region matches your actual location. A mismatched region can confuse the update server's certificate check.
- Restart QuickBooks Desktop and try the update again.
Repair the QuickBooks Desktop installation
If the earlier steps do not clear the error, the updater may have left mixed program files behind.
- Close QuickBooks Desktop and any other Intuit programs.
- Open Control Panel, then Programs and Features.
- Select your QuickBooks Desktop version and choose Uninstall/Change or Change.
- Choose Repair if the option appears and let it complete.
- Restart the computer, open QuickBooks Desktop, and run the update again.
- If Repair is not offered, reinstall the same edition and year. A repair or reinstall does not alter your company file.
Preventing Error 15220 from returning
After each major QuickBooks update, some security tools treat the changed program file as untrusted again. Check firewall and antivirus exclusions after major releases. Avoid shutting down, restarting, or putting the computer to sleep while a payroll update is running. Reboot before a payroll update if the computer has been running for a long time. Keep Windows date and time set to automatic, and run payroll updates from a Windows account with administrator rights. Finally, check the Intuit Update Service startup type periodically so a quiet service change does not return the error later.
