QuickBooks Error 15224 -- Server Connection Failure During Payroll Update

QuickBooks Error 15224 blocks payroll and maintenance updates from reaching the update server; our engineers walk through resolving the connection failure step by step.

QuickBooks Error 15224 interrupts a payroll or maintenance release update before it can finish downloading. The update manager cannot establish a stable connection to Intuit's distribution servers, so the download stalls or rolls back. Our engineers have resolved this error across single-user installations, terminal server deployments, and domain-joined workstations; the underlying cause is almost always network routing, certificate validation, or browser configuration — not damage inside the company file itself.

What the error message says

The full message reads:

Error 15224: QuickBooks could not complete the update. A file required for the update could not be downloaded. Please try again later.

In some installations the wording varies slightly and references "server connection failure" or "SSL/TLS error," but the error code remains 15224.

What the code means

Error 15224 is raised by the QuickBooks update service when it cannot complete an HTTPS handshake or sustain the download stream from the update server. The update process depends on Internet Explorer's certificate store and proxy settings even on systems that never use IE as a day-to-day browser. When any link in that chain — DNS resolution, TLS negotiation, certificate trust, or proxy routing — fails, the update manager aborts with this code.

What triggers it

The most common triggers our engineers encounter are:

  1. Internet Explorer is not set as the default browser or its security configuration has drifted. QuickBooks uses IE components for certificate validation during the update handshake.
  2. Outdated or untrusted root certificates in the Windows certificate store. If the system has not received Windows updates in an extended period, the Intuit signing certificates may not be trusted.
  3. Firewall, antivirus, or content-filtering proxy blocking the download domain. The update server hostname gets intercepted or filtered before the download can begin.
  4. Incorrect date and time on the workstation. TLS validation fails when the system clock is off by more than a small margin.
  5. SSL or TLS scanning enabled in third-party security software. The security suite intercepts and re-signs the download stream, which QuickBooks rejects.

How to fix it

Our engineers recommend working through these scenarios in order of frequency.

1. Reset Internet Explorer configuration

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Open Internet Explorer (even if another browser is your default).
  3. Go to Tools → Internet Options → Advanced.
  4. Scroll to the Security section and confirm that Use TLS 1.2 is checked. Disable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 if they are enabled.
  5. Go to the Security tab, select Trusted Sites, click Sites, and add https://*.intuit.com and https://*.quickbooks.com.
  6. Go to the Connections tab, click LAN settings, and confirm that "Automatically detect settings" is checked and no proxy is configured unless your network requires one.
  7. Click OK, close IE, and reopen QuickBooks. Run the update again from Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now.

2. Verify system date and time

  1. Right-click the clock in the Windows taskbar and select Adjust date/time.
  2. Confirm the time zone is correct.
  3. Toggle Set time automatically off and back on, or click Sync now if the option is available.
  4. Confirm the date matches the current day exactly.

3. Configure firewall and security software exclusions

  1. Add QuickBooks executable paths to your firewall and antivirus exclusion lists. The primary paths are:
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR\QBW32.exe
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks YEAR\QBUpdate.exe
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBServerUtilityMgr.exe
  2. If your security software has SSL or HTTPS scanning, disable it temporarily and retry the update.
  3. If you are on a domain with a content-filtering proxy, confirm that the proxy allows traffic to quickbooks.intuit.com and dl06.intuit.com (the specific subdomain can vary by release).

4. Run the Quick Fix My Program tool

  1. Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub from the in-product help or your installation media.
  2. Open Tool Hub and select Program Problems.
  3. Click Quick Fix My Program and allow it to complete.
  4. Reopen QuickBooks and attempt the update.

5. Update Windows root certificates

  1. Open Windows Update and install all pending updates, particularly any marked as security or root-certificate updates.
  2. Restart the workstation after installation.
  3. Retry the QuickBooks update.

How to prevent it recurring

  • Keep Windows Update enabled so root certificates stay current.
  • Leave TLS 1.2 enabled in Internet Explorer properties even if you use another browser.
  • Maintain firewall exclusions for the QuickBooks executables, and review them after any security software upgrade or replacement.
  • On terminal server or multi-user environments, apply these settings on the server itself and on every workstation that hosts the update manager.
  • Run QuickBooks updates logged in as the Windows administrator to avoid permission-related download failures that can surface as the same error code.
