QuickBooks Error 15270 -- Update Download Incomplete

Error 15270 stops a QuickBooks Desktop payroll or maintenance update because a payload file failed to download, leaving the installation partial.

QuickBooks Error 15270 appears during a payroll update or maintenance release download. The update process starts, retrieves some files from the server, and then halts because one or more payload files did not arrive intact. The result is a partial update that cannot finish until the missing or damaged file is replaced.

What the error message says

The full message displayed by QuickBooks is:

Error 15270: The payroll update did not complete successfully. A file used by QuickBooks Desktop was missing from the update payload. Please try again later.

In some installations the wording varies slightly and reads:

Error 15270: Failed to download update. The download did not complete successfully, or a file was missing from the update payload.

Both messages point to the same root cause: the update package QuickBooks received was incomplete.

What the code means

The 15xxx series covers update-delivery failures. Within that series, 15270 specifically indicates that the download connection opened and the server accepted the request, but at least one file inside the update payload was missing or failed its integrity check when QuickBooks tried to write it to disk. QuickBooks stops the update at that point rather than install a partial patch set.

What triggers it

Our engineers see Error 15270 most often in these scenarios, listed from most to least common:

  1. Internet Explorer security or TLS settings are outdated. QuickBooks Desktop relies on Windows Internet Explorer components for secure download connections. If IE is not configured as the default browser, or if TLS 1.2 is not enabled, the server may drop the connection mid-download.
  2. A firewall or antivirus program is blocking the download. Security software can quarantine or strip individual files from the update payload as they arrive.
  3. The Digital Signature Certificate on a QuickBooks executable has expired or is not recognized. When Windows cannot validate the signature on QBW32.exe, the update framework refuses to accept replacement files.
  4. The update download was interrupted. A brief network dropout, a proxy timeout, or a restarted router can truncate the payload.
  5. QuickBooks Desktop files are damaged on the local machine. Corrupted installation files can prevent the update engine from writing new components over old ones.

How to fix it

Scenario 1 — Internet Explorer and TLS settings

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Open Internet Explorer (even if you use another browser day to day).
  3. Go to Tools ▸ Internet Options ▸ Advanced.
  4. Scroll to the Security section and confirm that Use TLS 1.2 is checked. We also recommend unchecking Use TLS 1.0 and Use TLS 1.1 if they are enabled.
  5. Go to the Programs tab and click Make default under Default web browser.
  6. Click OK, close Internet Explorer, restart QuickBooks, and run the update again.

Scenario 2 — Firewall or antivirus interference

  1. Open your firewall or antivirus management console.
  2. Add the QuickBooks installation folder (typically C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks <year>) and the Intuit server domains used for updates to the allow list.
  3. Temporarily disable the antivirus or firewall.
  4. Run the QuickBooks update. If it completes successfully, re-enable the security software and keep the QuickBooks folders on the exception list permanently.

Scenario 3 — Digital Signature Certificate

  1. Close QuickBooks and open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks <year>.
  3. Right-click QBW32.exe and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Digital Signatures tab, select the Intuit signature in the list, and click Details.
  5. Click View Certificate, then Install Certificate, and follow the wizard to place it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store.
  6. Restart the computer and run the update again.

Scenario 4 — Interrupted download

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Navigate to the download folder: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks <year>\Components\Payroll (for payroll updates) or the corresponding Components\QB folder for maintenance releases.
  3. Delete the partially downloaded files in that folder.
  4. Restart QuickBooks and download the update again over a stable wired connection if possible.

Scenario 5 — Damaged QuickBooks installation files

  1. Close QuickBooks and back up your company file.
  2. Open the Windows Control Panel and go to Programs and Features.
  3. Select QuickBooks, click Uninstall/Change, and choose Repair.
  4. Allow the repair wizard to finish, then restart the computer.
  5. Run the update again.

How to prevent it recurring

Keep Internet Explorer configured as the default browser with TLS 1.2 enabled, even if you browse with another application. Add the QuickBooks installation folder and Intuit update domains to your firewall and antivirus exception lists so update payloads are not scanned mid-download. Run maintenance-release updates as soon as Intuit publishes them rather than letting several releases accumulate, and always close QuickBooks cleanly before shutting down the workstation so no update files are left in a half-written state.

Keep going

Your Desktop doesn’t have to end when Intuit says so.
