QuickBooks Error 2755 -- Server Returned an Error During Installation
QuickBooks Error 2755 stops the installer before setup finishes. Learn what the Windows Installer failure means and how to get the installation completed cleanly.
Error 2755 appears while the QuickBooks Desktop installer is running, and it stops setup before the program is usable. The message points at Windows Installer, not at your company data. This page explains what the code means, what sets it off, and the steps our engineers use to clear it.
What the error message says
The full message usually reads:
"Error 2755: Server returned an error : attempting to start process."
Some installations show it as "Error 2755. Server returned an error while installing package" followed by the name of the .msi file being processed at the time. The wording varies slightly between releases, but the number and the phrase "server returned an error" are constant.
What the code means
Error 2755 is a Windows Installer code, not a QuickBooks-specific one. It means the Installer service tried to launch a process needed by the installation package and that process failed to start. In practice, the Installer cannot open or execute one of the package files it needs. The QuickBooks setup program is simply the messenger; the failure sits in the Windows layer underneath it.
What triggers it
Three triggers account for most cases we see:
- Insufficient permissions on the installer package or the temp folder. The folder holding the extracted setup files, or the Windows temp directory, does not allow the account running the install to execute files.
- A damaged or incomplete download. If the setup file was cut short, or the extraction step failed partway, the .msi package is corrupt and cannot launch its internal processes.
- The Windows Installer service is stopped, disabled, or broken. If the service itself cannot start processes, every package fails the same way.
Antivirus interference and running the installer without administrator rights also produce this error, usually through the permissions route.
How to fix it
Work through these scenarios in order. The first one resolves the majority of cases.
Scenario 1: Permissions on the extracted installer files
- Right-click the QuickBooks setup file and choose "Run as administrator". Do not launch it by double-clicking.
- If the error persists, copy the setup file from its current location to a simple local path such as the root of C: or a new folder on the desktop. Network shares and the Downloads folder sometimes carry restrictive permissions.
- Right-click the folder you copied the file into, choose Properties, and confirm the account is not marked Deny under the Security tab.
- Run the installer again from the new location.
Scenario 2: Damaged or incomplete download
- Delete the downloaded setup file entirely.
- Download the installer again from your account portal, and let the download finish without pausing.
- Compare the file size shown after download against the size stated on the download page. A truncated file will not match.
- Run the fresh copy as administrator.
Scenario 3: The Windows Installer service
- Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Windows Installer in the list. Confirm its Startup Type is Manual, not Disabled.
- If it is stopped, right-click and choose Start.
- Close Services, restart the computer, and run the QuickBooks installer again.
Scenario 4: Antivirus or third-party security software blocking execution
- Temporarily disable real-time scanning in your security software.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Re-enable protection as soon as setup completes, and add the QuickBooks installation folder to the software's allowed list before the next update.
How to prevent it recurring
Always run QuickBooks installers with "Run as administrator", and always from a local drive rather than a network share. Keep the Windows Installer service set to Manual so it can start on demand. Verify downloaded setup files by size before running them, and pause real-time antivirus scanning during installation windows. After a successful install, apply updates from within QuickBooks rather than by downloading standalone packages, since in-product updates handle extraction and permissions themselves. If a future update fails with the same number, the permissions fix is the first place to look.
