QuickBooks Error 6000 Series: Can't Open Company File

The -6000 series (for example -6000 -83, -6000 -301, -6190 -816, -6000 -77) all point to one thing: QuickBooks can't open the company file. The suffix narrows down why. These are fixable on any version.

What the common variants mean

  • -6000 -83 -- general company-file access failure (permissions, network, or damage).
  • -6000 -301 -- often a damaged file or a problem reading it.
  • -6190 -816 -- the .TLG and .QBW are out of sync, or someone else has the file open single-user.
  • -6000 -77 -- opening a file on an external/mapped drive or a permissions issue.

Fix it, in order

  1. Copy the file locally. Move the .QBW to the local C: drive and try opening it there. If it opens, the issue is network/permissions, not the file.
  2. Run the QuickBooks Tool Hub › Company File Issues (Quick Fix / File Doctor). Keep a copy of the Tool Hub installer with your archives.
  3. Check the .ND and .TLG files. Rename company.qbw.ND and company.qbw.TLG (add .old); QuickBooks rebuilds them.
  4. Confirm single-user access if you see -6190/-816 -- make sure no one else has it open and it isn't in single-user elsewhere.
  5. Verify & Rebuild the file (see company file health) if damage is suspected.
Back up before repairing. Copy the current .QBW and .QBB aside before running repairs, so you always have the pre-repair state.

If the file is genuinely damaged
