QuickBooks Error -6150, -1006 -- Company File Cannot Be Opened or Created
QuickBooks error -6150, -1006 blocks access to your company file due to file damage or installation issues; our engineers identify the cause and restore working access.
QuickBooks Error -6150, -1006 is a 6000-series company file error that surfaces when QuickBooks Desktop cannot open, create, or work with a company file. The error typically points to one of two root causes: structural damage within the company file itself, or a corrupted or incomplete QuickBooks installation. In most cases the file can be recovered and normal access restored, but the exact repair path depends on which trigger is at play.
What the Error Message Says
The full message displayed by QuickBooks reads:
"QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We apologize for the inconvenience. Error (-6150, -1006)."
In some scenarios an additional line appears: "An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to create, open, or use the company file." The error may repeat each time the same file is opened, or it may appear only when performing a specific action such as creating a backup or running a verification.
What the Code Means
The -6150 component signals that QuickBooks failed during a low-level file operation — opening, creating, or writing to the .qbw company file. The -1006 sub-code narrows the failure to a file-level read or write problem, meaning QuickBooks could not correctly parse or modify the internal structure of the file. Together, these codes indicate that the database engine inside QuickBooks hit a point where the file's internal structure did not match what it expected.
What Triggers It
Our engineers see this error most often from three scenarios, listed here from most to least common:
-
Company file damage. The
.qbwfile has developed structural corruption — bad data blocks, a damaged transaction list, or index inconsistencies. This is the most frequent cause and can result from an improper shutdown, a power outage while QuickBooks was open, or natural file growth over time. -
Corrupted QuickBooks installation. One or more program files in the QuickBooks Desktop installation are damaged or missing. The application itself cannot properly handle file operations even if the company file is healthy.
-
Malware or antivirus interference. Security software quarantined or locked part of the company file, or malware damaged file sectors that QuickBooks needs to read.
How to Fix It
Scenario 1: Company File Damage (Most Common)
- Open QuickBooks Desktop but do not open the company file. From the No Company Open window, hold down the Alt key and click Open. Keep holding Alt until the file opens completely. If the file opens in this suppressed mode, the damage may be limited to a specific list or transaction.
- From within the open file, go to File > Utilities > Verify Data. Let the verification run to completion.
- If Verify reports damage, run File > Utilities > Rebuild Data. QuickBooks will prompt you to create a backup first — do so. The Rebuild utility attempts to repair structural inconsistencies automatically.
- Run Verify Data a second time after the Rebuild completes. If it reports no problems, try opening the file normally.
- If the error persists after Rebuild, restore your most recent working backup (
.qbb) to a new location and test whether the restored copy opens without the error. - If no backup is available or the backup also fails, the file requires professional data repair. Our engineers can perform structural repair using the file itself; you will need to provide the admin password and the Inventory Valuation Summary report for all dates so we can verify data integrity after repair.
Scenario 2: Corrupted QuickBooks Installation
- Close QuickBooks and download the QuickBooks Tool Hub from the Intuit website.
- Open the Tool Hub and run the Quick Fix my Program tool under the Program Problems tab. This repairs common program-level corruption in a few minutes.
- If the error continues, run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool from the Installation Issues tab. Allow it to finish completely — it can take several minutes.
- Restart the computer and attempt to open the company file again.
- If the error still appears, perform a clean uninstall of QuickBooks Desktop: uninstall through Control Panel, rename the old installation folders, then reinstall from your original download or media.
Scenario 3: Antivirus or Malware Interference
- Temporarily disable your antivirus software.
- Attempt to open the company file.
- If the file opens successfully, add the QuickBooks executable and the company file folder to your antivirus exclusion list.
- Re-enable the antivirus and confirm the file still opens.
- Run a full system malware scan to rule out file-level damage from malicious software.
How to Prevent It Recurring
- Keep regular verified backups — at minimum a rotating daily backup to an external or network location, not just the same drive as the live file.
- Always close QuickBooks before shutting down or restarting the computer; never force a shutdown while the company file is open.
- Run Verify Data monthly to catch structural issues before they become unrecoverable.
- Keep your QuickBooks Desktop updated to the latest release, as updates include database engine fixes.
- Ensure your antivirus is configured to exclude the QuickBooks program folder and company file directory from real-time scanning.
