QuickBooks Error 80070005: Windows Access Denied During Backup or File Access

QuickBooks error 80070005 means Windows denied access during a backup, update, or company file open; this guide isolates and removes the block.

QuickBooks Desktop error 80070005 is less a data file corruption message than a Windows permission barrier. When QuickBooks tries to open, back up, or update a company file, Windows denies the write or access request and passes that denial back to QuickBooks. Our engineers treat this as an operating system permission issue first, then a QuickBooks component issue second.

What the Error Message Says

Common verbatim wording includes:

  • QuickBooks was unable to open the company file. Error 80070005: Access is denied.
  • QuickBooks could not back up your company file. Error 80070005: Access is denied.
  • An unexpected error occurred while updating QuickBooks. Error code 80070005.

What the Code Means

Error 80070005 is the Windows ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED code. It means the Windows account that QuickBooks is running under does not have permission for a file, folder, registry location, service, or process needed to complete the action. It is not, on its own, proof that the company file is damaged. It indicates that Windows, not QuickBooks, refused the request at the operating system level.

What Triggers It

The most common triggers are:

  1. The company file or backup folder is in a restricted location such as C:\Program Files, the root of a drive, or a network share with read-only permissions.
  2. The Windows user account is a standard user without write access to the backup destination or the folder containing the company file.
  3. Controlled Folder Access or antivirus software blocks QuickBooks from writing to protected folders.
  4. QuickBooks is installing or applying a release update without administrator rights, and Windows blocks the installer from writing to the program directory.
  5. The company file or its folder has the read-only attribute or came from another computer and is blocked by Windows.
  6. A damaged Windows user profile or altered service logon settings prevent QuickBooks processes from reading or writing where they need to.

How to Fix It

Run through these scenarios in order.

  1. Run QuickBooks as administrator. Close QuickBooks. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If the error appears during an update, run the update file or QuickBooks executable as administrator, then retry. This resolves most update-related 80070005 errors.

  2. Correct permissions on the company file folder. From File Explorer, right-click the folder containing the company file and select Properties, then Security. Select the Windows user or group QuickBooks uses, click Edit, and confirm that Modify or Full control is allowed. If the file is stored directly in C:\Program Files or another protected folder, move it to a standard writable location such as C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files.

  3. Correct permissions on the backup destination. If the error occurs during backup, right-click the destination folder, open Properties, Security, and make sure the Windows user has Modify or Full control. Do not back up to the root of the system drive or to a network folder that grants only read access.

  4. Turn off Controlled Folder Access or add a QuickBooks exclusion. Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, then Ransomware protection. If Controlled Folder Access is on, either turn it off temporarily or allow QuickBooks. Add antivirus exclusions for the QuickBooks program folder, the C:\ProgramData\Intuit folder, the company file folder, and the backup folder, then retry the action.

  5. Remove the read-only or blocked file attribute. Right-click the company file .qbw file and choose Properties. Clear the Read-only checkbox on the General tab. If a Security section shows Unblock, click it and apply the change. This often appears when a company file is copied from another computer or restored from external media.

  6. Check the QuickBooks service logon. Open Services with services.msc. Find the QuickBooks services, typically including QBDBMgrN and QBCFMonitorService. Right-click each service, choose Properties, and on the Log On tab confirm the service is set to Local System account. Restart the service, then launch QuickBooks and retry.

  7. Validate the Windows user profile and temp folder. If the error persists across multiple company files, sign in as another Windows administrator, or create a fresh local administrator account, and test QuickBooks there. Also check that the user has full control of %temp%; a locked temp folder can produce the same error during updates.

How to Prevent It Recurring

Keep company files in standard user data folders rather than protected system directories, and set explicit Modify permissions for all Windows users who open the file. Configure antivirus or Controlled Folder Access exclusions before a release update or scheduled backup. Run updates from an administrator account, but run day-to-day QuickBooks work under a normal Windows user that has write access to the company file and backup folder. For network files, use a shared folder with both share permissions and NTFS permissions set to Change or Full control, and avoid mapped drives that inherit read-only restrictions. After any large Windows update, recheck the folder permissions and Controlled Folder Access settings, because Windows can reset these protections and produce a new 80070005 later.
