QuickBooks Error C=319: Damaged Company File Blocks Open
QuickBooks Error C=319 appears when file or component damage stops a company file from opening; learn the triggers and repair path that restores access.
QuickBooks Desktop error C=319 is a file-open failure. We see it when the program cannot validate a company file, or when a damaged application component interrupts the open sequence. The repair path depends on which layer failed. The steps below start with the more common company file damage and move to installation repair.
The error message verbatim
The dialog usually shows the standard QuickBooks close message:
QuickBooks has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Below or inside that dialog, the code C=319 identifies the failed process. In some installations the same code appears only in the QBWin.log event trail.
Meaning of error C=319
C= errors are assertion failures tied to the company file subsystem. Error C=319 specifically means the open request stopped before QuickBooks could finish mounting the file, verifying the lists, or matching the transaction log. It is not a licensing message, and it is not a Windows permissions message, although a permission conflict can produce a secondary C=319.
Because the failure happens early, the visible symptom is often a close dialog even when the file appears to be the right size and has a .qbw extension.
Common triggers
Most cases fall into one of four areas:
- Damaged company file or mismatched transaction log (.tlg)
- Interrupted write caused by power loss, force quit, or a network drop
- Corrupted QuickBooks Desktop component or incomplete update
- Company file stored in a synced folder that creates partial locks
Repairing error C=319
Work through the scenarios in this order. Do not skip the backup step in the first scenario.
Scenario 1: damaged company file or transaction log
- Close QuickBooks Desktop. Copy the entire folder containing the .qbw and .tlg files to a separate local drive. Do not rename the copy.
- Start QuickBooks while holding Ctrl. This opens the No Company Open window and stops the damaged file from loading automatically.
- Try to open the original company file from the No Company Open window. If it opens, log in as Admin and run File > Utilities > Verify Data. If QuickBooks reports damage, run File > Utilities > Rebuild Data, then run Verify Data again.
- If the file will not open or Rebuild does not clear the error, restore the most recent backup (.qbb) into a new folder. Test the restored file before using it for real work.
- If no clean backup exists, stop opening the damaged file. Repeated open attempts can write new damage into the file.
Scenario 2: corrupted QuickBooks component
- Restart the computer. This releases locked QuickBooks components and clears stale process handles.
- Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool from the QuickBooks Tool Hub, then restart again. The tool checks the supporting components that QuickBooks Desktop needs during file open.
- If the diagnostic passes but the error remains, repair the QuickBooks Desktop installation. In Control Panel > Programs and Features, select QuickBooks Desktop, choose Uninstall/Change, then select Repair.
- Install the latest release available for your QuickBooks Desktop year. A partial update can leave mixed component versions that trigger C= errors.
Scenario 3: company file stored in a synced folder
- Pause or stop the sync application.
- Copy the .qbw and .tlg files to a local folder such as C:\QBData.
- Open the local copy from QuickBooks Desktop and run Verify Data before returning to normal use.
Preventing recurrence
Prevention is mostly about file hygiene. Set automatic local backups and keep a rolling set of dated backup files. Store the company file on a local disk or a reliable server, not inside a synced folder. Use a UPS to protect against power loss, and always close QuickBooks through File > Exit. In multi-user mode, have all other users close the file before running Rebuild Data. Run Verify Data after large imports and after any QuickBooks version update.
