QuickBooks Error PS033 -- Damaged CPS Folder File Blocking Payroll

Error PS033 stops QuickBooks Desktop payroll updates from installing by flagging a corrupted file in the CPS folder, which our engineers resolve by clearing and rebuilding the folder.

When QuickBooks Desktop tries to download a payroll update and cannot, Error PS033 is one of the more common causes. The error points to a damaged or incompatible file inside the CPS (Common Program Support) folder, which payroll relies on to stage tax-table and form data before applying it to your company file. Our engineers see this error most often on installations that have accumulated stale payroll components across version upgrades.

What the Error Message Says

The full message typically reads:

QuickBooks is having trouble installing your payroll update. Error code: PS033.

In some installations the message continues with a line referencing the CPS folder or a specific file within it. The error can appear during a manual payroll update, during a scheduled background update, or when opening the Employees tab if a pending update is queued.

What the Code Means

PS033 is a payroll-update staging error. QuickBooks downloads payroll data into a temporary holding area and then moves the validated files into the CPS folder. If one of the files already in that folder is damaged, has a zero-byte length, or carries a version stamp that does not match the installed QuickBooks release, the update engine refuses to overwrite it and halts with PS033. The error is not a company-file corruption problem; it is isolated to the payroll component store on the workstation.

What Triggers It

  • Stale CPS files from a prior QuickBooks version. After an upgrade, leftover files from the older version can conflict with the new payroll update payload.
  • Interrupted payroll update. A network drop, system restart, or background-process termination during a previous update can leave a partially written file in the CPS folder.
  • Antivirus quarantine. Security software may flag a payroll component file and partially lock or truncate it, leaving a damaged file behind.
  • Multiple QuickBooks installations sharing one CPS folder. Running more than one version of QuickBooks Desktop on the same workstation can cause version mismatches in the shared component store.

How to Fix It

Our engineers recommend working through these scenarios in order, starting with the most common cause.

1. Clear and rebuild the CPS folder (most common fix)

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop completely.
  2. Open File Explorer and enable the display of hidden files and folders (View tab > check Hidden items).
  3. Navigate to the CPS folder. The default path is: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20XX\Components\Payroll (Replace 20XX with your QuickBooks year, for example 2024.)
  4. Select all files and folders inside the Payroll folder and delete them. Do not delete the Payroll folder itself.
  5. Empty the Windows Recycle Bin.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Open QuickBooks, go to Employees > Get Payroll Updates, and run the update again. QuickBooks will rebuild the CPS contents from scratch.

2. Install the latest QuickBooks maintenance release

If clearing the CPS folder does not resolve the error, the QuickBooks installation itself may be behind on a cumulative patch, which can cause version-stamp mismatches.

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the current manual update patch for your version and year.
  3. Run the patch while QuickBooks is closed.
  4. Restart the computer when prompted.
  5. Open QuickBooks and attempt the payroll update again.

3. Exclude QuickBooks directories from antivirus scanning

If your security software is truncating payroll component files during the update write process, the problem will recur even after clearing the CPS folder.

  1. Open your antivirus or endpoint-protection management console.
  2. Add the following paths to the exclusion or allow list:
    • C:\ProgramData\Intuit\
    • C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files\
  3. Save the exclusion policy.
  4. Clear the CPS folder again using the steps in Scenario 1.
  5. Run the payroll update.

4. Repair the QuickBooks Desktop installation

If the CPS folder is clean and the installation is current but the error persists, a damaged QuickBooks program file may be feeding bad data into the component store.

  1. Close all running programs.
  2. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features (or Apps & Features in Windows 10/11).
  3. Select QuickBooks from the list and click Uninstall/Change.
  4. Choose Repair and allow the wizard to finish.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Run the payroll update.

How to Prevent It Recurring

  • Apply QuickBooks maintenance releases promptly so the CPS folder stays version-aligned.
  • Configure antivirus exclusions for the Intuit ProgramData path before the next payroll update cycle.
  • Avoid running two different-year versions of QuickBooks Desktop on the same workstation if payroll updates are used in both.
  • If a payroll update is interrupted, clear the CPS folder before attempting the update again rather than retrying over the damaged files.

Your Desktop doesn’t have to end when Intuit says so.
