QuickBooks Error PS058 -- Payroll Update Download Failure

Error PS058 halts a QuickBooks Desktop payroll update mid-download, leaving tax tables stale; our engineers walk through every trigger to restore successful updates.

QuickBooks Error PS058 interrupts a payroll update before the new tax table or maintenance release finishes downloading. The update appears to stall, and the next time you open or run payroll, QuickBooks reports that the tax table is out of date or that the update did not complete. Our engineers have resolved this error across single-user and multi-user installations, and in every case the path to a fix depends on identifying which component blocked the download.

What the Error Message Says

The full message typically reads:

"QuickBooks is having trouble installing your payroll update. [Error code: PS058]."

In some installations the wording varies slightly — for example, "Payroll update did not complete successfully (PS058)" — but the code is always PS058.

What the Code Means

PS058 is a payroll-service update error. It signals that QuickBooks Desktop began downloading a payroll update (tax tables, forms, or a maintenance release) but could not write the downloaded files to the correct location on disk, could not verify the files after download, or lost the connection to the update server before the transfer finished. The error is not a data-damage error in the company file itself; it is an update-delivery and file-write error.

What Triggers It

Our engineers see PS058 most often in these scenarios, listed from most to least common:

  1. Damaged or incomplete files in the Downloads folder — A previous update left partial or corrupted files in the QuickBooks Downloads folder, and the new update cannot overwrite them.
  2. Internet Explorer security or TLS settings — QuickBooks relies on Windows Internet Explorer components for secure downloads. If TLS 1.2 is disabled or the browser security level is too restrictive, the download fails.
  3. Firewall or antivirus blocking the download — Security software intercepts the payroll update connection or quarantines downloaded files.
  4. Incorrect QuickBooks Desktop installation — One or more update-related components or registry keys are missing or damaged.
  5. Multi-user hosting configuration — In a multi-user setup, the workstations are pulling updates independently instead of through the server hosting the company file.

How to Fix It

Scenario 1 — Clear the Downloads folder

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop on every computer.
  2. Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Data\Intuit\QuickBooks (Windows hides the Program Data folder by default, so enable hidden items in the View tab).
  3. Locate the folder named Components (in some versions it appears as Downloads).
  4. Open the folder, select all contents, and delete them. These are temporary update payloads, not program files.
  5. Restart QuickBooks and run the payroll update again from Employees › Get Payroll Updates › Download Entire Update.

Scenario 2 — Reset Internet Explorer settings and enable TLS 1.2

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Open Internet Explorer (even if you use another browser, QuickBooks still uses its engine).
  3. Go to Tools › Internet Options › Advanced.
  4. Scroll to the Security section and confirm that Use TLS 1.2 is checked. Uncheck Use TLS 1.0 and Use TLS 1.1 if enabled.
  5. Click Reset under the Advanced tab, then restart the computer.
  6. Reopen QuickBooks and retry the payroll update.

Scenario 3 — Configure firewall and antivirus exceptions

  1. Open your firewall or antivirus software and add QuickBooks to the allowed-applications list.
  2. Add these executable paths as exceptions (adjust the version number for your installation):
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks XXXX\QBW32.EXE
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks XXXX\QBDBMgrN.exe
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks XXXX\IntuitSyncManager.exe
  3. Temporarily disable the antivirus, run the payroll update, then re-enable the antivirus immediately afterward.

Scenario 4 — Run a QuickBooks clean install

If the steps above do not resolve PS058, the Desktop installation itself may be damaged.

  1. Back up your company file.
  2. From the Windows Control Panel, uninstall QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Rename the QuickBooks installation folders (search for the Intuit folders under Program Files and Program Data and append "OLD" to each folder name).
  4. Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop from your installer or downloaded setup file.
  5. Run the payroll update.

Scenario 5 — Correct multi-user update sharing

In a multi-user environment, only the server designated as the host should download and share updates.

  1. On each workstation, go to Help › Update QuickBooks Desktop › Options.
  2. Confirm that Shared Download is selected and that the shared-download path points to the server.
  3. On the server, set Yes to share downloads; on workstations, set No and let them pull from the server.

How to Prevent It Recurring

  • Run payroll updates logged in as the Windows Administrator.
  • Clear the Components or Downloads folder before each major payroll update if your environment has slow or intermittent connectivity.
  • Keep TLS 1.2 enabled year-round; disabling it for other applications is a frequent cause of recurring PS058.
  • In multi-user setups, designate a single hosting server for updates and verify the configuration after any workstation or server change.
  • Maintain firewall exceptions for QuickBooks executables after every version upgrade, because updates can reset the allowed-applications list.
