QuickBooks Error PS077 -- Payroll Update Tax Table File Damage

Error PS077 blocks payroll tax-table downloads in QuickBooks Desktop; our engineers walk through the causes and the steps to get updates installing cleanly again.

QuickBooks Desktop relies on a locally cached set of tax-table files to calculate payroll taxes correctly. When one or more of those cached files are damaged, renamed, or locked by another process, the payroll update routine cannot write the new tax table over the old one and halts with Error PS077. The good news is that the underlying company file is rarely the problem; the failure lives in the update cache and the billing-information handshake, both of which our engineers have cleared in hundreds of cases without touching the ledger itself.

What the error message says verbatim

The most common on-screen text reads:

QuickBooks Error PS077: QuickBooks is having trouble installing payroll update [release number].

A second variant appears in the Windows notification area:

Error PS077: A file used by QuickBooks Payroll is missing, damaged, or cannot be found.

Either message is typically followed by a prompt to retry the download, which will fail again until the underlying cause is addressed.

What the code means

The "PS" prefix identifies the error as a payroll-service update failure, not a general QuickBooks update problem. The numeric suffix 077 specifically indicates that the update engine detected a mismatch between the tax-table files already on disk and the replacement files arriving from the update server. In practice, that mismatch is caused by one of three things: a corrupted file in the existing Payroll folder, an incorrect or expired Direct Deposit / payroll service key stored in the company file, or a stale Internet Explorer security configuration that is blocking the signed download.

What triggers it

Our engineers see Error PS077 most often in these scenarios:

  • Damaged tax-table files in the local Payroll folder. A prior update was interrupted by a power loss, a forced shutdown, or an antivirus quarantine, leaving partial .tax and .cab files behind.
  • Incorrect or expired billing details on file. The payroll service key no longer matches what the update server expects, so the server refuses to deliver the new tax table.
  • Outdated QuickBooks maintenance release. The installed version of QuickBooks Desktop is behind the minimum release required for the current tax-table cycle.
  • Third-party security software interference. An antivirus or firewall product is quarantining the downloaded update payload before QuickBooks can install it.
  • Windows user-account control or file-permission issues. The signed-in Windows user lacks full read/write access to the Payroll subfolder inside the QuickBooks installation directory.

How to fix it

Our engineers recommend working through the following scenarios in order, starting with the most common cause.

Scenario 1 — Damaged tax-table files

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop completely.
  2. Open the QuickBooks installation folder. The default path is C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks [year] for Pro/Premier or C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions [year] for Enterprise.
  3. Locate the subfolder named Components and, inside it, the folder named Payroll.
  4. Rename the Payroll folder to Payroll_OLD. This forces QuickBooks to rebuild the cache from scratch on the next update.
  5. Reopen QuickBooks, sign in to the company file as the Admin, and run Employees > Get Payroll Updates > Download Entire Payroll Update.

Scenario 2 — Incorrect billing or service key

  1. In QuickBooks, go to Employees > My Payroll Service > Account/Billing Information.
  2. Verify that the service status shows Active and that the Direct Deposit or Enhanced Payroll service listed matches what your business is paying for.
  3. If the status is inactive or the service key is blank, go to Employees > My Payroll Service > Activate Payroll Service and re-enter the service key provided in your original confirmation email.
  4. After activation, return to Get Payroll Updates and attempt the download again.

Scenario 3 — Outdated QuickBooks release

  1. With the company file open, press F2 to open the Product Information window and note the release number shown at the top (for example, "R14_39").
  2. Close all company files and select Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop > Update Now.
  3. Check Mark All and click Get Updates.
  4. When the download completes, restart QuickBooks and accept the prompt to install the new release.
  5. After the restart, return to Get Payroll Updates and download the payroll update.

Scenario 4 — Security software interference

  1. Temporarily disable real-time scanning in your antivirus or endpoint-protection product.
  2. Add the entire QuickBooks installation folder to the antivirus exclusion list.
  3. Re-enable real-time scanning and attempt the payroll update once more.

Scenario 5 — Windows file permissions

  1. Right-click the QuickBooks desktop shortcut and select Run as Administrator.
  2. If the update succeeds under the Admin account, confirm that your regular Windows user has Full Control over the Components\Payroll folder by right-clicking it, selecting Properties > Security, and granting Full Control to the appropriate user group.

How to prevent it recurring

Our engineers recommend three habits that keep Error PS077 from coming back. First, always close QuickBooks through the normal File > Close Company/Log Off and File > Exit sequence before shutting down Windows; abrupt terminations are the leading cause of partial tax-table files. Second, add the QuickBooks installation folder to your antivirus exclusion list permanently so that signed update payloads are not quarantined mid-download. Third, install every QuickBooks maintenance release promptly when prompted, because Intuit ships minimum-release requirements that the current tax table depends on; falling behind by even one release can trigger this error at the start of a new payroll cycle.
