QuickBooks Desktop 2018 officially reached the end of Intuit's live support and update services on May 31, 2021. If you are still using this version—and it can run perfectly well for basic accounting offline—your primary goal is to protect your working installation. Allowing an unexpected or forced update to apply to a discontinued version can sometimes trigger reactivation loops or break established workflows. Here is how to lock the software down so your install never changes.

Disable Updates Inside QuickBooks

The first line of defense is turning off the internal update mechanism inside the application itself. This step is identical across practically all QuickBooks Desktop versions:

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop 2018.
2. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
3. Navigate to the Update Now tab.
4. Uncheck the box at the top that enables automatic updates.
5. Click Save.

If you previously downloaded update files but haven't installed them, make sure you do not accidentally trigger the "Install Now" prompt the next time you close the software. Decline any pending internal update prompts so your current release remains untouched.

Stop the QuickBooks Update Agent

5. Click Apply, then OK, and restart your computer.

Alternatively, you can open the Windows Services console (services.msc), find the Intuit Update Service, right-click it, select Properties, and change the Startup type to Disabled.

Lock Down the Download Folders

Even with background services turned off, it is good practice to prevent the system from writing new update payloads to your hard drive. QuickBooks typically stages downloaded patches in a specific folder.

Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2018\Components\Download (your exact path may vary slightly depending on your Windows version). Because ProgramData is a hidden folder by default, you will need to enable hidden items in your Windows File Explorer view to see it.

Once you have located the Download folder:

1. Right-click the folder and select Properties.
2. Go to the Security tab.
3. Click Edit to change permissions.
4. Select the Users group and check the box to Deny Write permissions.
5. Apply the changes.

By denying write access, you ensure that even if an update process somehow bypasses your service blocks, it cannot save the necessary files to your drive to execute the installation.

Keep Your Installation Stable
