QuickBooks Desktop 2019 officially reached end-of-life on May 31, 2022. With Intuit's value-added services—payroll, bank feeds, and technical support—cut off for this version, the software is now entirely on its own. To keep your 2019 install running reliably for the long haul, the most important step you can take is preventing the automatic updater from altering your working setup. Blocking updates stops unwanted background changes, prevents forced feature removals, and ensures your system remains stable without Intuit's intervention.

Here is how to lock down QuickBooks Desktop 2019 so it never changes unexpectedly.

Disable Updates Inside QuickBooks

The first line of defense is the built-in update preference within the QuickBooks application. This step is identical across most recent QuickBooks Desktop versions:

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop 2019 and navigate to the Help menu.
2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
3. Go to the Update Now tab.
4. Uncheck the box at the top that reads Automatic Update (you may also see an option for "Keep QuickBooks up-to-date automatically"—ensure this is unchecked).
5. Click Save.

While this stops the application from actively fetching updates, we recommend taking further action to ensure the built-in setting is never accidentally toggled back on by another user.

Disable the QuickBooks Update Service

QuickBooks installs a background Windows service designed to fetch and apply patches silently. Disabling this service ensures updates cannot be processed even if the in-app setting is bypassed.

1. Press Windows + R on your keyboard, type services.msc, and press Enter.
2. Scroll through the list and locate QuickBooks Update Agent Service (it may also be listed under Intuit).
3. Right-click the service and select Properties.
4. Change the Startup type dropdown menu to Disabled.
5. If the Service status says "Running," click the Stop button.
6. Click Apply and OK.

Lock Down the Intuit Update Folders

Even with the app settings and background service disabled, it is good practice to restrict Windows folder permissions for the directories where QuickBooks downloads its patch files. This provides a hard block against any residual updater components.

You will want to restrict permissions for the following default locations (though your exact drive letter may vary):

• C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks
• C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks

To lock these folders down:

1. Right-click the folder in File Explorer and select Properties.
2. Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
3. Select the "Users" group from the list.
4. Check the box under the "Deny" column for Write.
5. Click Apply and OK.

Note: Applying a Deny rule overrides any Allow rules. You may need administrator privileges to change these settings.

Managing the QuickBooks Internal Timer
