QuickBooks Desktop 2022 officially reached sunset on May 31, 2025. While the software itself will continue to open and function offline, Intuit's servers will no longer provide live services, and more importantly for a stable system, the update channels remain active. Allowing an automatic update on a discontinued version can sometimes alter your working environment or trigger unexpected reactivation prompts. Disable Updates Inside QuickBooks

The first line of defense is turning off the automatic update feature inside the application itself. This step is identical across practically all recent QuickBooks Desktop versions.

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop 2022 and navigate to the Edit menu, then select Preferences.
2. In the left pane, scroll down and click on General.
3. Switch to the My Preferences tab at the top.
4. Look for the Update QuickBooks section. Uncheck the box for Automatically download and install new updates.
5. Click OK to save your changes.

You can still manually check for updates if you ever specifically need a legacy maintenance release, but the software will no longer pull them automatically in the background.

Block the QuickBooks Updater

6. If the service status shows as running, click Stop, then click OK.

Next, check your Windows Task Scheduler for any Intuit-related automated tasks. Open Task Scheduler, click on the Task Scheduler Library, and look for tasks named "QuickBooks Update." Right-click and select Disable on any update tasks you find.

Lock Down the Intuit Folders

As a final layer of protection, restricting Windows write permissions to the QuickBooks installation folders prevents the software from silently downloading and applying patch files.

1. Close QuickBooks Desktop completely.
2. Navigate to your QuickBooks installation directory. This is typically located at C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2022.
3. Right-click the folder and select Properties.
4. Under the Security tab, click Edit to change permissions.
5. Select the Users group, and check the box to Deny Write access. (Ensure System and Administrators retain Full Control so the program can still run normally).
6. Click Apply and OK.

You may also want to restrict write access to the hidden Intuit folders where downloads are staged. Open File Explorer, navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks, and apply similar Deny-Write permissions to the Components folder.
