Block QuickBooks Desktop 2023 Updates Before the May 2026 Sunset

Stop QuickBooks Desktop 2023 from auto-updating after its May 31, 2026 service discontinuation. Lock down the app, updater, and folders.

QuickBooks Desktop 2023 is scheduled to lose live services on May 31, 2026. Once that sunset hits, Intuit stops delivering patches, payroll tax tables, and banking connections—but the software itself keeps running. To keep your 2023 install stable indefinitely, the most important step is preventing automatic updates from silently changing a working setup. Here is how to lock the application, the background updater, and the file system down.

Turn Off In-App Automatic Updates

This step is identical across practically all recent QuickBooks Desktop editions (Pro, Premier, and Enterprise). You switch the application from downloading patches automatically to notifying you first, or to doing nothing at all.

1. Open QuickBooks and go to the Help menu.
2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop (in some layouts, Update QuickBooks).
3. Go to the Options tab.
4. In the Automatic Update section, select No (or "Notify me instead of downloading updates automatically" if you still want to see what is available before committing).
5. Uncheck the box for Automatic Download of New Updates.
6. Click Save.

If you manage multiple workstations, you can deploy this setting across the network using QuickBooks' built-in Shared Updates feature, but for a single permanent install, the local "Off" switch is the most reliable method.

Disable the QuickBooks Update Service

Even when the in-app setting is turned off, a background Windows service can still attempt to pull down updates. Disabling it ensures no silent patches are applied when you restart your computer.

1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
2. Scroll down to find QuickBooks Update Agent Service (sometimes listed as Intuit Update Service).
3. Right-click it and select Properties.
4. Change the Startup type to Disabled.
5. If the Service status says "Running," click Stop.
6. Click Apply and OK.

Lock Down the Update Folders

QuickBooks writes downloaded update files to specific folders on your hard drive before applying them. Restricting write access to these folders stops any stray updater processes from successfully staging an installation.

The primary folder is located at: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks

(Note: ProgramData is a hidden folder. To see it, open File Explorer, click the View tab, and check Hidden items.)

To lock it down:

1. Right-click the QuickBooks folder inside ProgramData and select Properties.
2. Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
3. Select the Users group.
4. Under the permissions list, check the box under Deny for Write.
5. Click Apply and OK.

You may also want to check for an Updates folder located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\Components and apply similar restrictions if you find update files staging there.

Why Locking Down Matters Now

After May 31, 2026, Intuit will no longer officially test or certify new updates for the 2023 version. Any background updates pushed to older versions are generally designed to phase out features or enforce compliance with Intuit's current ecosystem, which can break your carefully maintained offline workflow. By freezing your install today, you ensure the exact software configuration you rely on remains untouched.
