With Intuit discontinuing live services and add-on features for QuickBooks Desktop 2022 on May 31, 2025, relying on the software's integrated online backup options is no longer viable. To keep your 2022 company file running safely offline for the long haul, you need a completely self-reliant, local backup strategy.

The Core Backup: Scheduled .QBB Files

A standard file copy only saves your working .QBW file, which is vulnerable to corruption if copied while QuickBooks is actively running. Instead, you must generate a compressed .QBB (QuickBooks Backup) file. This process safely captures your data and performs basic data integrity checks.

While most backup mechanics are identical across recent QuickBooks Desktop versions, you can set up an automated local schedule in 2022 by going to File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup, selecting Local Backup, and clicking Options. In the options menu, choose your local destination folder and check the box to Add the date and time of backup to the file name.

During setup, QuickBooks will ask if you want to schedule future backups. You can configure the 2022 software to run unattended backups automatically—provided you leave your computer powered on with QuickBooks closed during the designated backup window.
